About the Item
Oil on board
19 x 19 inches in dark brown wood frame
18 x 18 inches unframed
This modern, abstracted naive style oil painting was made by Poughkeepsie, NY based artist Darshan Russell. Here the artist used a limited but high contrast palette of scarlet, canary yellow, dark green, gray, white, black, and umber to create the scene, which depicts several vehicles parked in a snowy lot. Painted in rounded abstracted forms, traditional perspective is abandoned in favor of a more playful caricature. The colorful cityscape is complimented by a dark brown wood frame, with a wire fastened to the back for install hanging.
About the artist and her work:
Hudson Valley artist Darshan Russell is a self-taught artist and has been exhibiting her work in many locations about the region. The colors and feeling of her compositions are greatly influenced by Matisse, but Russell’s inspiration comes directly from life and the simple scenes that surround her in Poughkeepsie, Kingston, Hudson and other Hudson River towns where she paints. Occasionally, Ms. Russell will paint cities that she has traveled to like New York, Baltimore, Portland and Paris, but the bulk of her work documents local scenes and local people. The photographs accompanying articles in the Poughkeepsie Journal or the New York Times inspire much of her figurative work. Portraits of Madelaine Albright and Mayor Dinkins are part of her repertoire as well the less notorious individuals.
Ms. Russell’s paintings have a unique look that can be contributed to her practice of daily painting and years of dedication to develop a style all her own. She is as interested in landscapes as figures and city scenes. Her work has become well collected with the increased appreciation in folk art and naïve work.

- Lotus Number Four (Hard Edge Floral Still Life Painting of Lotus Leaves)By Frank DePietroLocated in Hudson, NY30 x 24 x 1 inches oil on canvas Inspired by close observations of the natural world and encounters with still moments that give us pause. Lines, shapes and colors encountered in nature, reveal the cycles of decay and regeneration that are life’s constant state of change. The work has a quiet, meditative quality. The subject is portrayed in a manner true to their existence in a specific time and place and selected based on considerations of visual relationships to formal elements of painting. Aspects of photo realism, hard edge and color field techniques are utilized to isolate the uniqueness of the subject’s detail, as well as emphasize flatness and illusion of depth within the two-dimensional space of the painting. About the artist: Frank DiPietro was born and raised in Scranton PA. He received a Bachelor of Art from Bloomsburg University in 1997, majoring in both Painting and Ceramics with a minor in Art History. In 2000 he earned a degree in Art Education from Moore College of Art and Design while continuing his studies in painting. Frank lived in Philadelphia for twelve years painting and teaching at several museums, art centers and schools in the region. In 2010 he and his family moved to Chester County PA, where he currently resides. Frank currently teaches painting classes and workshops at the Delaware Art Museum and Longwood Gardens...Category

- Japan Japanese Garden by French naive outsider folk art primitive artist, 1975Located in Norwich, GBA perfect painting for lovers of Japan and those of primitive/naive outside art. It is a work by an internatoanlly noted extraordinary artist with an extraordinary life. Maurice LOIRAND (1922-2008) is born into a working class family in Brittany, near the Atlantic coast coast in France. He starts working as a skilled labourer in the shipyards aged 15. Aged 20, when the Nazis start to occupy the country, he joins the Resistance movement, where he meets and befriends thinkers, painters and poets. He is thus introduced to an artistic and intellectual universe far removed from the world of his origins. Loirand finds himself drawn to art, and soon dedicates all his free time to learn how to paint. Completely self taught, he soon begins to exhibit his pictures alongside high level artists. He moves to Paris in the 1950s, and - although still working as a technician - paints all night. He finally becomes a full time artist in 1968. International travel and a multitude of exhibitions follow. He exhibits in Brazil, Argentina, and with Jean Tiroche Gallery in New York, among others. His work is now shown alongside works by Leger, Matisse and Picasso. The Collector's Guild New York Ltd commissions Maurice Loirand for several works of lithographic art. Loirand discovers Japan in the early 1970s, and decides to stay for 18 years. He marries Kazué SHIMOTORI, a Japanese poet...Category
