William Anderson
"Shipping off the Coast, " (possibly Isle of Wight)

18/19th Century

About the Item

WILLIAM ANDERSON British 1757 - 1837 "Isle of Wight" Oil on Panel. The painting is not signed though it is undoubtedly of his hand. It has the label from Thomas Agnew on the reverse and has Christies numerical stamp too. It is very common for these 18th Century artists not to sign all their pictures. It is housed in a handmade gold frame made to a traditional marine pattern. A wonderful artist whose work on a large scale has been compared to Canaletto, Anderson produced several paintings of the highest quality, and his work has always been greatly respected and has influenced many of his contemporaries in particular John Ward, who is known to have copied some of his pictures The work of William Anderson has always commanded high prices and this little painting is an example of a painting produced when he was at the height of his creative talent and is one of the finest examples of these small but exquisite works of art that it is possible to obtain. Anderson was an important link between the Dutch and the later British School of marine painting, a sailor early in life his considerable knowledge of ships, the sea and of sailing gave him an insight, which many of his contemporaries lacked. He first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1787, and at the British Institution in 1810. He died in London on May 27th, 1837. Anderson has nine paintings in the National Maritime Museum and many others in important collections around the world.

Jules Van Biesbroeck was the son of Jules Evariste van Biesbroeck, a painter of Ghent, but was born in Italy, in Portici, near Naples, while his parents were staying there. (In the 19th century many artists made educational trips to Italy). It was a long visit: the child was two years old by the time the family returned to Ghent.[1] After a short period of practice with his father, van Biesbroeck was enrolled in the Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent. His first painting, "The Shepherd" (French: Le pâtre), was sold at the Triennale in Ghent. In 1888, when he was only 15 years old, he made his debut at the "Salon des Champs-Elysées" in Paris with his monumental work "The Launch of the Argo" (French: Le lancement...
