Tslil Tsemet
"EYE CHECK", surrealist oil painting, nude woman, optical lens, machine, mask

2008

About the Item

"EYE CHECK, 2008, is a surrealist oil painting on canvas by artist Tslil Tsemet, and measures 66x47". At once vulnerable and defiant – a nude woman sits up in a stylish chair, red with black pattern, her eyes magnified in a fantastic optical machine fitted like a headdress mask. From Tslil Tsemet – "Through art, I examine the human species via the social and cultural values that we bond ourselves to, and the collective ideals we grasp in order to maintain sanity. My paintings are inspired by the imagery of global cultures, religions, mythologies, and philosophies. I create art that stimulates many parts of the brain at once; that is simultaneously funny, disgusting, attractive, twisted, sad, happy, scary, mysterious, confusing, beautiful, and ugly — just like life." From VICE Magazine – "As a kid growing up in Nahariya, Israel, artist Tslil Tsemet wasn't breast-fed. Curious about how it felt, she and her older sister decided to use drinking straws in order to try to drink milk from a stray cat who just had kittens. It didn't work, but the amusing yet creepy experience remained with the artist and influenced her body of work as an adult. Tsemet's art is at once weird, imaginative, and disturbing—serving as a commentary on the delicate yet crucial balance between innocence and cruelty." Tslil Tsemet has had a number of solo exhibitions in the U.S. and Israel, including Studio 939 and Neutra Museum in Los Angeles, California, the ATA Gallery in San Francisco, California, and the Jaffa Art Salon in Tel-Aviv, Israel. Her work has appeared in group shows, including Think Tank Gallery, Hive Gallery and Gregorio Escalante Gallery, all of Los Angeles, California; and also the Alfred Gallery, Hanina Gallery and Palace Gallery, all of Tel-Aviv, Israel. Tslil Tsemet received her BFA in 2011 at Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, Jerusalem, Israel. She currently lives and works in New York City, USA.
