Signed verso, 'Ant McNaught', for Anthony McNaught, (American, born 1952), inscribed 'with thanks to Sarah Trundle' and dated 2021. This California Post-Impressionist and Abstract Expressionist artist studied at the Esalen Institute with Erin Gafill and Tom Birmingham and, later, at the Santa Cruz Art League. He currently lives and paints in Santa Cruz.

    Signed lower right, 'A. Minewski' for Alexander Minewski (American, 1917-1979) and painted circa 1950. Born in Detroit, Alexander Minewski left home at the age of 14 to work in the circus. He subsequently worked as a sign painter and a logger. Minewski first studied at the Society of Arts and Crafts in Detroit (1936-1939) and received scholarships that allowed him to attend the Art Students League in New York City (1939-1942). There, he studied under artists including Jean Charlot, Ernest Fiene, George Grosz and Vaclav Vytlacil. During World War II, Minewski joined the army and fought as a combat engineer. Wounded in Burma while fighting with Merrill's Marauders, he spent two years there recovering from his wounds. Following his time in Burma, Minewski studied for two years on the G.I. Bill in Paris at the Académie de la Grande Chaumiere (1950-1952) and, independently, with Hans Hofmann in New York City (1952-1953). Hofmann was influential on his style and his work shifted away from a moody realism towards a fuller expressionism.     Bold and angular composition with cannas by Claire Weist (American, 1930-2014). Bright red flowers jump out from a saturated green background. Large leaves act as a background, covering the majority of the composition, intertwined with other foliage. This piece is executed on top of a previous composition and the artist has left part of it visible around the edges to act as a border. Signed "Weist" in the lower left corner. Title and artist's info on verso. No frame. Board size: 20"H x 16"W Claire Weist (American, 1930-2014) was an artist known primarily for her watercolor compositions. She won several awards throughout her career, including the jury award for graphics from the Illinois Watercolor Society. Weist was originally from the Boston area and studied at the Massachusetts College of Art and then Harvard. After spending time teaching art and as an illustrator, Weist moved to Crete, Illinois and opened her own studio, where she spent the remainder of her professional career.
