NY PETER MAX (German/American, b. 1937) Artist Peter Max was born in Berlin in 1937. Max and his family escaped Nazi Germany and fled to the Orient. Peter Max spent his childhood in Shanghai. From China, the family went to Tibet for a year, and then on to Israel. Peter Max's family's odyssey continued to Paris, and finally, at the age of 16, immigrated to the United States in 1953. Exposed to the paintings of Buddhist monks as a child, Max continued to exhibit a strong fascination with Eastern mysticism throughout his career. He studied the teachings of Eastern mystics and began practicing yoga under Swami Satchidananda, developing a discipline that helped inform and mold his art work as well as many of his personal convictions in life. As he told Publishers Weekly: "What fascinates and drives me is that man and his acts are insignificant, microscopic in terms of the continual evolution of the universe . . . . " Peter Max began his art studies in New York at the Art Student's League and continued at the Pratt Institute and School of Visual Arts. Peter Max, who is known throughout the world and is a household name in America, is famous for his new age style, cosmic imagery and multi-colored blends. During the late 1960's and early 70's, Peter Max's colorful art reached millions of people and he won numerous major awards for his work. Peter Max's paintings, drawings, sculpture and limited edition graphics have been exhibited in major museums throughout the world.
