Richard Jacobs
"Holiday", Abstract Drypoint Etching and Aquatint, Numbered and Signed

1990

About the Item

"Holiday" is a work that displays Richard Jacobs early Balinese influence. This abstract work made with drypoint etching manifests a layer of depth and contrast that is achieved through an Indonesian technique of drawing the lines of the resist or printing it with a copper stamp that allows an artisan to selectively color the work through the soaking process. "Holiday" is exemplary of this earlier aquatint process before Jacobs would go on to apply a diversity of colors to his work. The print is 39 x 29 inches and is signed and numbered from an edition of 30 by the artist. Numbered edition may not necessarily be number 17 as there are multiple prints in the possession of Collected Detroit. Richard Jacobs was born in 1961. He is an American Postwar and Contemporary whose work has followed a path from the abstract to an investigation of figure and portrait. His work often combines woodcut transfers that explore the vibrancy of shapes and spatial distance, a technique he developed during his time spent in Bali where he learned the indigenous art of creating batik at woodcarvings. He received his BA from the Cooper Union in 1984 and his MFA from Yale University in 1987. He has been exhibited at the Howard Yezerski Gallery in Boston, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the deCordova Museum, the Rose Art Museum, the Dash Gallery in Cincinnati, the Harrison Gallery in Boca Rato, Knust Kunz Munich (Theresienstrasse), and the Jack Geary Contemporary in New York City. His work with Bali techniques earned him the Henry Luce Scholarship and exhibition at Ubud Bali and a curated exhibition of the Balinese influence at the Cooper Union.
