J. F. BUFFORD PUBLISHER and PRINTER LAST MOMENTS OF PRESIDENT LINCOLN, April 15, 1865 Lithograph, very good impression. The 2 lower publishing lines read, printing lightly "Issued From Buffords' Print Publishing House 313 Washington St. - Entered according to a Act of Congress in the Year 1865 by J. F. Bufford in the District Court of Mass". Image 10 1/4 x 12 3/4 inches. Sheet 12 1/4 x 16 3/8 inches. After the assassination of President Lincoln at Ford's theater on April 15, 1865, many versions depicting the assassination act by John Wilkes Booth and Lincoln subsequent death were issued. Currier & Ives and many other publishers issued lithographs. The important Boston publisher J. F Buffords did as well. THIS VERSION OF THE DEATH OF LINCOLN IS RARE. The caption below the image identifies several of the figures An example of this print is in the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, also identifies the various figures as, Gideon Welles, 1 Jul 1802 - 11 Feb 1878, Salmon Portland Chase, 13 Jan 1808 - 7 May 1873, Abraham Lincoln, 12 Feb 1809 - 15 Apr 1865, Charles Sumner, 6 Jan 1811 - 11 Mar 1874, Robert Todd Lincoln, 1 Aug 1843 - 25 Jul 1926, Henry Wager Halleck, 16 Jan 1815 - 09 Jan 1872, Edwin McMasters Stanton, 19 Dec 1814 - 24 Dec 1869. In generally good condition save for discoloration within the previous mat open from light exposure carrying through to the verso and a repaired tear in the upper right corner extending slightly into the image and a couple other repaired edge tears.

Very Good Condition. image, 13 1/2 x 9 3/4". Full sheet with deckle edges, 16 x 11 3/4". The Evangelist apparently represents de Martelly's New Hampshire neighbor Lizzy Osgood. De Martelly worked in an American Regionalist Style, often depicting his New Hampshire neighbors. He was associated with Thomas Hart Benton at the Kansas City Art Institute. Most of de Martelly's regionalist prints were published by Associated American Artists in editions of 250. This lithograph is scarcer in an edition of only 100.
