Rene Murray
"ROMAN OPERA HOUSE", stoneware clay sculpture, copper green glaze Italy hilltown

2007

About the Item

ROMAN OPERA HOUSE is a stoneware clay sculpture with Copper Green glaze by Brooklyn, New York artist Rene Murray. It measures 19"H x 23"W x 11"D. The sculpture is made in two sections. Inspired by the ancient hilltowns of Italy, "Roman Opera House" is part of an architectural series of buildings, as the artist states below – From Rene Murray – "For many years, my sculptural work has been inspired by the ancient hilltowns of Italy with their multiple towers, fortress-like walls, soaring arches and twisting staircases. These pieces are meant to evoke the feeling of these towns, their glorious exterior beauty contrasted with what I imagined (and which history acknowledges) were cold, dark interiors for those who inhabited them." Deep in the heart of the Gowanus neighborhood of Brooklyn, artist Rene Murray runs her studio building, complete with gas-fired kiln – creating vessels both functional and sculptural using the age-old techniques and conventions of the potter. Rene Murray's work is in museum collections – both the Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit, Michigan and the Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse, New York – and private collections across the United States. Her work has shown in gallery solo shows and group shows, including the Clay Art Center, Port Chester, NY; Greenwich House Pottery, NYC; San Antonio Art Gallery, San Antonio, TX; Art In Clay, BWAC, Brooklyn, NY; Funke Fired Arts Gallery, Cincinnati, OH; and the prestigious SOFA CHICAGO Art Fair. Rene Murray completed her Master of Fine Arts degree in ceramics at the University of Michigan in 1964. She was the first woman at the University of Michigan to do so.
