About the Item

"While traveling around Mexico with my brother and his wife in 1994 we visited Kohunlich, a remote archeological site in the state of Quintana Roo. The ruins are located far back in the jungle, almost on the border with Belize. The three of us were the only visitors there and we really enjoyed having the site to ourselves. At one point we climbed a Mayan platform and once on top we encountered one of those visual "moments" that stay with you for life. A small volunteer tree was growing in the middle of the platform and the entire crown of the tree was covered with Toucans, dozens and dozens of them. It looked like the tree was in full bloom. Over the next few minutes the birds slowly flew away, one or two or three at a time, like flower petals blowing in the wind." - David Everett David Everett was born in Beaumont, Texas, and received both his B.F.A. and M.F.A. from The University of Texas at Austin. Valley House began showing his multi-articulated, painted wood sculptures in 1986. “My interest is not only in animals but the abstraction of the animal form...dealing with rhythms and intervals, colors and patterns, working a composition... not unlike music,” states artist David Everett, who is also an accomplished musician. Although Everett is best known for his wood sculptures, he is also creates two-dimensional drawings and woodcuts. His most significant influence stems directly from his earliest memories with his brother; they had a mutual affinity for the forests, swamps, bayous, marsh covered plains and bays that are the landscape of Southeast Texas. From this vantage point Everett began a life-long process of restating his observations into a visual art that explores what is, in his words, a paradoxical and allegorical interplay of both human and animal forms, celebrating the natural history of a personal world. His work often involves a grouping of animals that, contextually, become layered with meaning in their discussion of the fragile constructs within our universe.
