Ashley Benton Art

American, b. 1968
Ashley is an American artist living in Savannah Georgia. Her work and practice is primarily mixed media paintings and sculptures with a focus on ceramics. “ My work begins with the subtle impressions left from living a life” Through Emotionally charged ideas and recurring imagery the viewer is encouraged to participate in a dialogue that hovers between dreams and reality inviting them to create their own story. ‘My work begins with the subtle impressions left from living a life. I use recurring imagery of rabbits, birds, wings, hoods and caps, flora even missing body parts almost like a key to a map. The recurring images can be symbolic of a tendency, a comment on a belief or an anecdote. While I am working it is like a private message between me and the piece, which becomes a public conversation inviting the viewer to have their own experience. Occasionally it turns out it is the same experience for the viewer as it was for me and this reveals our commonality. This is important to me because we all have our individual story. It lingers in the unconscious. My work can act as a retrieval cue. Stories, poems, songs, relationships are all there until I start to daydream getting out of the thinking mind. I can let any new version be told much like a writer of fiction. There are silver linings, dead ends, sharp curves, love, loss, vulnerability, blue skies, dark clouds, deep water and pretty little things. We have our own version of all these things. It is what makes us unique as well as binds us together and it all hovers between reality and a dream.’ - Ashley Benton

Title : Preservation Jar 1 Materials : Stoneware, Underglaze, Glaze Date : 2020 Dimensions : 12" x 5.5" 5.5" Description : Ceramic jar with hand-painted vintage textile print Rachel Hubbard Kline's work explores the wistfulness of personal connections to historical domestic objects and material culture. Kline seeks symbiosis in the relationship of surfaces to forms and addresses the hierarchy of importance between the form itself and the image or decoration. Objects both functional and decorative, factor into the banality and routineness of daily life. As the current political and social climate continues to shift, She seeks to compare past and present means of the production of goods and labor. Surface design inspired by vintage textile prints from family quilts and other historical motifs appear in Kline's work. The vessel acts as a stand in for the body and a metaphor for preservation. Kline's series of jars and jugs are intended to preserve memories of family members and places by using specific colors, patterns and objects she remembers from childhood to the present. Rachel Hubbard Kline is an art educator and artist in her hometown Kansas City, MO. With a background in fashion and art history, she explores relationships of fine art and craft in the disciplines of drawing, painting, ceramics, and fiber. Hubbard draws on her Midwestern roots and ties to rural farm life to reflect on past ways of life based on collections and artifacts. Hubbard Kline has been the recipient of educator residencies at the Kansas City Art Institute, a participant in the Connecting Collections teacher institute in New York, and Educator Conferences and AP Teacher Training at the Savannah College of Art and Design. She earned a Master of Arts in Teaching from Park University in 2010, a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Connecticut in 2007, and attended Parsons School of Design. She is currently pursuing her Master of Fine Arts in Studio Art at the Maryland Institute College of Art. By Kyungmin Park
Located in St. Louis, MO
Kyungmin Park is a figurative ceramic sculptor drawing inspiration from childlike perspectives. Contrasting the darker emotions and restricted psyche of adulthood with the boundless consciousness of children, Kyungmin’s sculptures confront the view with uncomfortable juxtapositions, encouraging reflection upon personal expectations and narratives. Kyungmin largely uses handbuilding techniques to construct her figures out of porcelain, a material she prefers for its ability to contrast starkly with bright and colorful decoration. Originally from South Korea, Kyungmin earned her MFA in Ceramics from the University of Georgia in 2012 and her BFA from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University in 2008. Currently, Kyungmin is an Assistant Professor of 3D studio Art at Endicott College in Beverly...
