"Reproof" A Marble Sculpture by Edward Russell Thaxter
By Edward R. Thaxter
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This enchanting museum quality Carrara marble group is the work of Edward Russell Thaxter (born Yarmouth, ME 1857-died Naples, Italy 1881). The sculpture depicts a young girl sternly scolds her cat, who has just attacked a bird's nest. She clutches the cat to her chest and looks at it disapprovingly, while waving her hand in discipline. Meanwhile, a dead bird lies at her feet and feathers hang limply from the cat’s mouth. This scene is a prelude to the responsibilities of motherhood: the young girl who is now reprimanding her cat will have to ensure that her own children are well behaved in the future. The sculpture rests on a dark green serpentine marble pedestal. Although Edward Thaxter's life was short, he excelled in creating detailed neoclassical sculpture. Signed: E. R. Thaxter Titled: Reproof Circa 1878-1880 Measures: Height with pedestal 76" (193 cm) Height of sculpture 40" (101 cm) Another example of this marble figure is in the Smithsonian National Museum in Washington DC. Artist biography: Edward Russell Thaxter was only twenty-four years old when he died, but in his brief career as a sculptor he garnered praise for his work and was deemed an artist with a promising future. Born in Yarmouth, Maine, he is believed to have chosen to study sculpture after seeing the work of John Rogers. At the age of sixteen, Thaxter moved to Boston and studied with the portrait sculptor John D. Perry. In 1878 Thaxter left for Florence, Italy, where he took a studio and began to create the neoclassical works that won him critical attention. In 1881 he contracted typhoid fever, which left him in a weakened condition, and within the year the young sculptor died in Naples. Thaxter's untimely death was noted with genuine regret in the American press. The critic James Jackson...

Abstract Marble Sculpture by Emile Gilioli
By Émile Gilioli
Located in Stamford, CT
This beautiful marble sculpture by Emile Gilioli is made of rose veined marble (white/pink). The sculpture is signed and dated on wooden base. "Emile Gilioli was born to a family on Italian shoemakers who had settled beside the Canal Saint-Martin. After the first World War, the family moved back towards Italy, settling in Nice. In 1932, Gilioli took courses at the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs de Nice, notably with the future artist Marie Raymond. During the Second World War, Gilioli was mobilized in Grenoble where he passed the remainder of the conflict. He made the acquaintance of Andry Fracy, a conservationist at the Grenoble Musee des baux-arts and led him to discover cubism. After the war, Gilioli settled in Saint-Martin-de-La-Cluze near Grenoble, where he sculpted in his workshop. His art was associated in a certain way with the deeds of the French Renaissance. He became friendly with Thomas Gleb...

Abstract Marble Sculpture by Jan Keustermans
Located in Vlimmeren, BE
This abstract sculpture in Portuguese marble was sculpted ‘en taille directe’ by the Belgian artist Jan Keustermans. The soft pink veins of the Portuguese marble are beautiful. The sculpture is not signed. It is a unique piece, one of his most recent work. It is the first time that Jan Keustermans and his family offer a selection of sculptures, directly from the artist’s atelier. Jan Alfons Keustermans (°1940) is a Belgian sculptor, medalist and draftsman. He studied at the National Higher Institute of Fine Arts in Antwerp and until 2000 he was director of the Municipal Academy of Fine Arts in Turnhout. He has won several art prizes for sculpture and participated in group exhibitions in Belgium and abroad. He has created more than 850 works. In 1994, he won the Ministry of Finance’s competition for a portrait of King Albert II on the Belgian currency. In 1997 he designed a similar version for the euro coin. Keustermans’ work evolved from figurative to completely abstract. He describes the abstract works as ‘memorial...
