"PLENTY", watercolor, abstract, ice cream, landscape, patterns, textiles, fruit
By Fleur Thesmar
Located in Toronto, Ontario
PLENTY is a new watercolor on Fabriano paper by Fleur Thesmar. The artwork measures 22x30". Note the gentle complexity of the composition, the suggestion of dollops of ice cream and fruit, or piles of colorful clothes, or a fanciful landscape. The scale grows large and small, far away and right in your lap! From Fleur Thesmar – "My memory invents places and shapes, finding new games of mirrors thanks to mathematical models and theories. Shapes resembling bowls of fruit, balloons, landscapes and so on, actually fulfill a dream of mine to free the imagination and let the viewer invent as well." Having moved her family from France to America, artist Fleur Thesmar closely observed the changes in her world – from the seemingly obvious such as surrounding landscapes, the light of day and weather, the flowers, trees and shorelines – to the smaller less obvious shifts, such as how one behaves in a new world, in a new home, how one cherishes certain belongings and certain memories. Her artistic practice is borne out of that close observation and shift in perspective, and has led to a number of successful gallery shows in the U.S. and internationally. Fleur Thesmar has shown at Beacon Gallery in Boston MA, 440 Gallery, Brooklyn NY, Old West Museum, Cheyenne WY, Belmont Art Gallery, Belmont MA, and Salon Ile-de-France 2020, Bourg-La-Reine, France. Her work is on permanent display at the Tower Hill Botanic...

"ABSTRACT (Tree) ", watercolor, geometry, sun, trees, road, natural pigments
By Fleur Thesmar
Located in Toronto, Ontario
ABSTRACT (Tree) is a new watercolor on Fabriano paper by Fleur Thesmar. The artwork measures 30x22", and is a striking composition in tones of gold, slate green, umber and tan. Note the strong sense of unfurling, of opening up the road and sky. And of course the tree that serves as invitation and destination all at once. From Fleur Thesmar – "Some geometric shapes and reflections seem to come alive, like the Sun in the sky, an open road, a huge tree from the ground up. It's like a game of mirrors, a vibration. This painting is made with hand-harvested pigments transformed in watercolor, in an effort to investigate the history and sustainability of my medium." Having moved her family from France to America, artist Fleur Thesmar closely observed the changes in her world – from the seemingly obvious such as surrounding landscapes, the light of day and weather, the flowers, trees and shorelines – to the smaller less obvious shifts, such as how one behaves in a new world, in a new home, how one cherishes certain belongings and certain memories. "MY OUT-OF-REACH GARDEN", abstract watercolor, memory, flowers, stars, textile
By Fleur Thesmar
Located in Toronto, Ontario
MY OUT-OF-REACH GARDEN is a new watercolor on Fabriano paper by Fleur Thesmar. The artwork measures 22x30", and is a structured composition in tones of blue, violet, rose, gold and green. Bordering on abstraction and representation, there appear to be sheets of paper, a desk, and yet surrounded by flowers, patterns and textiles it becomes a larger scene, a collection of memories. From Fleur Thesmar – "When you cannot return to a place you love, your memory invents the place for you. Apparent forms are suddenly unrecognizable, a reconstructed memory of a far-away place. Wrapped in patterns, grids and cloth, lights and stars shine as if from a mirror. Throughout are organic, fantastic shapes of flowers." Having moved her family from France to America, artist Fleur Thesmar closely observed the changes in her world – from the seemingly obvious such as surrounding landscapes, the light of day and weather, the flowers, trees and shorelines – to the smaller less obvious shifts, such as how one behaves in a new world, in a new home, how one cherishes certain belongings and certain memories. "MEMORY BOX", abstract watercolor, change, journey, family, map, green, mauve
By Fleur Thesmar
Located in Toronto, Ontario
MEMORY BOX is a new watercolor on Arches paper by Fleur Thesmar. The artwork measures 22x30", and is a striking composition in tones of rose, emerald green, mauve, blue and violet. It's a courageous work of art, seemingly a map or record of change for the artist and her family. From Fleur Thesmar – "Memory Box is a painting of how we remember changes in our lives, sometimes in a fuzzy way. Daily rituals can blur important moments where a shift occured. We look at pictures or videos and over time tend to lose details." Having moved her family from France to America, artist Fleur Thesmar closely observed the changes in her world – from the seemingly obvious such as surrounding landscapes, the light of day and weather, the flowers, trees and shorelines – to the smaller less obvious shifts, such as how one behaves in a new world, in a new home, how one cherishes certain belongings and certain memories. By Fleur Thesmar
Located in Toronto, Ontario
TRANSFIGURATION is a new watercolor on Fabriano paper by Fleur Thesmar. The artwork measures 30x22", and is a structured composition in tones of green, blue, umber, rose and teal. Bordering on abstraction and figuration, a landscape of trees and water and sky appears to open up symmetrically, possibly revealing a spirit. From Fleur Thesmar – "Inspired by a mathematical model, I painted this abstraction which slowly took on the form of a person. The shivering brushstrokes create a textured relief, while the person seems to emerge from and recede into the background." Having moved her family from France to America, artist Fleur Thesmar closely observed the changes in her world – from the seemingly obvious such as surrounding landscapes, the light of day and weather, the flowers, trees and shorelines – to the smaller less obvious shifts, such as how one behaves in a new world, in a new home, how one cherishes certain belongings and certain memories. ABSTRACT (Reflect) is a new watercolor on Fabriano paper by Fleur Thesmar. The artwork measures 30x22", and is a striking composition in tones of slate blue, teal, umber and tan. Note the symmetry, the apparent clearing in the center and rippling to the sides. And of course the focus, the great celestial sphere... From Fleur Thesmar – "Some geometric shapes and reflections seem to come alive, like the Sun or the Moon in the sky reflecting on a pond. It's like a game of mirrors, a vibration. This painting is made with hand-harvested pigments transformed in watercolor, in an effort to investigate the history and sustainability of my medium." "DREAM 1", watercolor, abstract flowers, cypresses, feathers, lilac, gold, blue
By Fleur Thesmar
Located in Toronto, Ontario
DREAM 1 is a new watercolor on Fabriano paper by Fleur Thesmar. The artwork measures 30x22", and is a striking composition in tones of gold, blue, rose and pink. Here again the artist plays with scale and invites the viewer to play as well – trees, feathers, or flowers in the abstract? From Fleur Thesmar – "My dreams inspire new drawings, like pink cypresses in the countryside, feathers or lilac branches close at hand. I love to free the viewer's gaze, to wander in their own imagination." Having moved her family from France to America, artist Fleur Thesmar closely observed the changes in her world – from the seemingly obvious such as surrounding landscapes, the light of day and weather, the flowers, trees and shorelines – to the smaller less obvious shifts, such as how one behaves in a new world, in a new home, how one cherishes certain belongings and certain memories. "THUNDER ROLL", watercolor, glass, kitchen, travel, memory, identity, home, love
By Fleur Thesmar
Located in Toronto, Ontario
THUNDER ROLL is a watercolor on Arches paper by Fleur Thesmar. The artwork measures 22x30". It is professionally framed in white, with UV protection and anti-glare glass. Framed it measures 26x34". A recurring subject for the artist, a world traveller, is memory and landscape, possessions and identity. In "Thunder Roll" we see cherished wine glasses in a carton being packed or unpacked, either way in a state of transition. The play of light on the glass and on the wrapping paper suggests sunny days and warm moments. And the presence of the leaves adds a natural, wholesome energy to this home. From Fleur Thesmar – "The painting "Thunder Roll" is part of a body of work called “Removal” which features semi-realistic still lives of clothes, bubble wrap and sometimes cardboard and glasses. It questions themes such as possession and identity, removal and travel, memories and storage. It also resonates with landscapes and here, with the summer fields in France before the storm. I store memories of large tables, wine glasses and lace napkins...

Janus, Botanical Watercolor & Gouache on Paper, 2 Bud Vases with Purple Flowers
By Christina Haglid
Located in Chicago, IL
Two bud vases seemingly defy gravity as they teeter upon a watery surface in Christina Haglid's "Janus". This meticulously detailed watercolor invites the viewer to take a closer look at nature, to question what is seen and to enter into a newly created world. Intricate in her execution, Haglid uses watercolor as one might use a colored pencil. Layer upon layer of color is added to achieve this impressively detailed painting. Christina Haglid Janus watercolor and gouache on paper 11h x 8w in 27.94h x 20.32w cm CMH031 Artist's Statement Tiny Sanctuaries There has always been an intersection between the process of writing and the act of painting in my work. It has somehow been my guide. In the last four years, during the making of this work, that connection intensified as I started writing short stories and flash fiction while taking online classes. I find the process of writing and painting so different in almost every way, but there is something freeing and generative in writing which helps my painting process. Or perhaps it's a reminder of what painting is for me - something intuitive that needs to be trusted. Modernist Abstract Expressionist Watercolor Painting Bauhaus Weimar Pawel Kontny
By Pawel Kontny
Located in Surfside, FL
Abstract watercolor composition bearing the influence of the earlier color-block compositions of Paul Klee. Pawel August Kontny, (Polish-German-American artist) He was born in Laurahuette, Poland, in 1923, the son of a wealthy pastry shop owner. In 1939 he began studying architecture in Breslau where he was introduced to the European masters and to the work of some of the German Expressionists, soon afterward banned as "degenerate artists" and removed from museums throughout Germany by the Nazi regime. His studies were interrupted by World War II. Drafted into the German army, traveling in many countries as a soldier, he sketched various landscapes but in 1945, he was captured and held as a prisoner of war in Italy. After the war, he studied at the Union of Nuremberg Architects to help design buildings to replace ones destroyed in the war. He recorded his impressions of the local population and the landscapes through his watercolors and drawings. Pawel Kontny thereafter moved to Nuremberg, Germany, becoming a member of the Union of Nuremberg Architects and helping to rebuild the city's historic center. He soon decided to concentrate on his professional art career. He married Irmgard Laurer, a dancer with the Nuremberg Opera. Pavel Kontny 's career as an artist was launched with his participation in an all German exhibition, held at the Dusseldorf Museum in 1952. He held one-man shows in Germany, Switzerland and the United States. During his trip to the United States in 1960, Kontny became instantly enamored with Colorado, and decided to relocate to Cherry Hills with his wife and two children. He quickly established himself in the local art community, being affiliated for a time with Denver Art Galleries and Saks Galleries. His subject matter became the Southwest. During this time he received the Prestigious Gold Medal of the Art Academy of Rome. His extensive travel provided material for the paintings he did using his hallmark marble dust technique. he also worked equally in pastel, watercolor, charcoal and pencil-and-ink. in a style which merged abstraction and realist styles, influenced by Abstract Expressionist painting and South Western American landscapes. This one bears the influence of Sam Francis. In the early 1960s he was one of only a few European-born professional artists in the state, a select group that included Herbert Bayer (1900-1985), a member of the prewar Bauhaus in Weimar and Dessau, Germany, and Roland Detre (1903-2001), a Hungarian modernist painter. As a Denver, Colorado resident, Pavel Kontny exhibited at galleries and museums throughout the United States, Germany and Japan. There, he was inspired by frequent trips to Native American pueblos in the Southwest, as well as by the study of the Plains Indians of Montana and Wyoming. Over the years Kontny had a number of students and generously helped young artist by hosting exhibitions at his Cherry Hills home. For many years he generously donated his paintings to support charitable causes in Denver. Influences during his European years included German pastelist C.O. Muller, German Informel painter Karl Dahmen and Swiss artist, Hans Erni. In the early 1950s his painting style showed the influence of the Die Brücke (The Bridge), a group of German expressionist artists formed in Dresden in 1905 who had a major impact on the evolution of modern art in the twentieth century in Germany. By the middle of the decade his style incorporated more referential abstraction and total abstraction, resulting in part from his study of Hans Hartung, a German artist based in Paris who exhibited his gestural abstract work in Germany. The American moon landing in 1969 inspired Paul Kontny...
