Greta Magnusson-Grossman Credenzas

Swedish, 1906-1999

Designer and architect Greta Magnusson Grossman first gained fame in her native Sweden, where she established her store and workshop and became the first woman to receive a prize for furniture design from the Swedish Society of Industrial Design. In 1940, she married jazz musician Billy Grossman and moved to Los Angeles.

Upon her arrival in Southern California, she opened the Magnusson Grossman Studio on Rodeo Drive and rapidly became popular among the Hollywood elite, including Greta Garbo and Gracie Allen. In addition to creating iconic furniture and lighting — like the Grasshopper series for Barker Bros. or the Cobra lamp for Ralph O. Smith — Magnusson Grossman designed 14 homes in the Los Angeles area inspired by the Case Study Houses.

Combining her Scandinavian roots with laid-back West Coast style, Magnusson Grossman became a notable contributor to California modernism.

Greta M. Grossman Series-62 Credenza for Glenn of California
By Glenn of California, Greta Magnusson Grossman
Located in Los Angeles, CA
A Californian icon designed by Swedish-American architect Greta M. Grossman in collaboration with the manufacturing company, Glenn of California in the United States during the 1950s. This credenza features a walnut wood construction with a glossy black laminate coating that contrasts beautifully with the warm wood hue and grain texture. The legs and leg joinery are made of solid black iron with spherical wood feet tips that add bold elegance to this exemplary design. The left side of the credenza features three walnut drawers with spherical walnut pulls, while the right side features a storage compartment with one adjustable shelf. Though designed in 1952, this credenza was part of the ’62 Series because it’s design was said to be 10 years ahead of its time. Its superior quality and remarkable craftsmanship showcase Californian Modern furniture...
