Artist biography
Born at Mâcon in France, artist Hippolyte Petitjean studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under the tutelage of academic artists Alexandre Cabanel and Pierre Puvis de Chavannes.
In 1884 Petitjean met and become close friends with the older Neo-Impressionist artist Georges Seurat – whose influence changed the course of Petitjean’s artistic career. Alongside his work as an art teacher, Petitjean also exhibited to wide critical acclaim in Brussels (1893,1898), Berlin (1898), Weimar (1903) and Wiesbaden (1921). Bouquet de Fleurs, Hippolyte Petitjean, French, Pointillism, Still Life, Flowers
By Hippolyte Petitjean
Located in Wiscasset, ME
Hippolyte Petitjean mastered to perfection the Neo-Impressionist technique, pointillism. A close friend of Georges Seurat, Petitjean took up Neo-Impressionism in 1886, and later exhibited on a regular basis with fellow practitioners. Although he gave up working in divided color for some years before the turn of the century, he resumed the dot technique around 1912. In his late watercolors, Petitjean used widely spaced round dots of pure color, leaving much of the paper surface untouched. Hippolyte Petitjean started his training in Mâcon and then became a student at the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris, where he worked in Cabanel’s studio. By selling two Seurat paintings that he owned for 25,000 gold francs...
