Japanese, 1914-1988
Jun'ichiro Sekino was born in Aomori Prefecture, Japan, in 1914. He began making wood print art while still in middle school before formally pursuing etching with Kon Junzo. Active in the print scene, Sekino participated in the Chokojuto (1932) and Shin Hanga (1935) art shows, and exhibited with the Nihon Hanga Kyokai group as well. After winning the Teiten prize for etching in 1936, he moved to Tokyo in 1939. Jun’ichiro Sekino continued his studies at the Etching Institute of Takeo Nishida, where he also trained in oil painting and drawing.
Sekino commenced his study of woodblock prints with Koshiro Onchi and soon joined the Nihon Hanga Kyokai during the 1930s, followed by the Kokugakai in 1940. He exhibited worldwide, winning particular acclaim in the United States for his woodblock prints following World World II. In 1958, the Japan-America Society brought Sekino to the United States, where he taught at Oregon State University in 1963. Upon returning to Japan, he assumed a position at Kobe University in 1965 and received the medal of the Imperial Household Agency in 1981. Sekino’s work is greatly inspired by old Japanese and European masters alike, such as Sharaku and Albrecht Durer. The subject of his work varies, although he commonly focused on portraits, landscapes and semi-abstract designs. Jun'ichiro Sekino passed away in 1988.

This relatively large print, which is of a rooftop view of a temple shrine in Japan (perhaps Nagasaki as he did a similar print in 1975 but perhaps Kyoto or Tokyo) is hand pencil signed, sealed / stamped in red, numbered (18/128), and dated (1972). The image is likely from Sekino's coveted rooftop series that he did featuring various rooftop patterns from around the world including Japan and Italy. An exquisite and rare / hard-to-find work.

A truly wonderful and exceedingly rare early limited edition woodblock print by famed Japanese artist/printmaker Junichiro Sekino.
This print, titled "Yosaku Feeling Ill", is one of Sekino's earliest known works. A very dramatic image done in black and white, this work features the artist himself in a self-portraiture as he comforts his young son (who evidently does not feel well) in an almost playful and knowing manner.
The print is double signed - once in white ink within the image and also hand pencil signed and numbered (9/30) by Sekino in the lower margin. The image features a focused and rather direct composition emphasized by the use of just the two colors. It is an exquisite and very rare/hard-to-find work. Quite engaging. A must for collectors of Sekino's work.

We believe this was created in 1956 although it could have been made in 1946 (there are some conflicting dates on this image but we assume 1956 is correct) and comes from a limited edition of 50 prints (the exact number of this particular print and date/year is likely listed in pencil below the matt but we have not removed the print from the frame to confirm the exact number/year). The very image is widely considered by many Sekino critics and scholars to be one of Sekino's masterpieces. It is an exquisite and rare/hard-to-find work.

It was created in 1957 and comes from a limited edition of 100 prints (the exact number of this particular print is likely listed in pencil below the matt but we have not removed the print from the frame to confirm the exact number).
