Olivier Debre Art

French, 1920-1999
From an early age, Olivier Debré began to paint, draw and sculpt. At the age of 14, he was naturally influenced by the impressionist landscapes of his grandfather, the painter Edouard Debat-Ponsan (1847-1913). In 1938, received at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, he joined the architecture studio run by his uncle and frequented that of Le Corbusier. In 1941, he meets Picasso who will have a decisive influence on him. He now seeks to express his emotion without going through the representation. The sign thus appears to him as the incarnation of emotion and thought. While being abstract, he considers that the sign does not mean anything other than reality. In 1949, he presented at Galerie Bing his first solo exhibition of colorful and expressive paintings. Around 1950, Olivier Debré favors matter and dull colors. Always carried by the idea of the sign as representation of the thought, he paints the series of "signs-characters". At the turn of the 1960s, Olivier Debré returned to the landscape and found his original way. the formats get longer, suggesting both a panoramic view of a limitless space and diving into a near-monochronic. He therefore describes his painting as a fervent abstraction because it symbolizes the emotion aroused by the contemplation of a landscape. During the 80s-90s, Olivier Debré benefited from several public commissions: the curtain-stage of the Comédie Française, the Hong Kong Opera, and the Shanghai Opera. In 1995, the National Gallery of the Jeu de Paume offers a retrospective of Olivier Debré, also presented in Europe and Latin America. He died in Paris on June 2nd, 1999.

Geranium

’Geranium’ By Yutaka Takayanagi. Medium - Relief and lithographic print Edition - 5/20 Signed - Yes Size - 510mm x 660mm Date - 1978 Condition - Excellent. 10 out of 10. Born in Tokyo in 1941, Takayanagi's artistic journey began when he enrolled at Tokyo University of the Arts in 1960, studying under the renowned oil painter Kaoru Yamaguchi. His talent was quickly recognized when he received an Honorable Mention at the 8th Shell Arts Award Exhibition in the same year. During his time at university, Takayanagi took an intensive course in copper plate printing under Tetsuro Komai, receiving his degree from the graduate school in 1966. Fascinated by the simultaneous color print method, he started creating copperplate prints and soon gained recognition for his unique metallic reliefs, which he produced using collages of English newspapers. Takayanagi's passion for experimentation led him to create metallic emboss reliefs using his own photographs, and in the latter half of the 1980s, he moved on to silkscreen prints. He continued to push the boundaries of his art, constantly exploring new techniques and mediums. In 1978 and the following year, Takayanagi was appointed as an arts researcher for the Ministry of Culture and traveled to the United States, France, and the UK. These experiences enriched his artistic perspective and further cemented his reputation as a highly regarded artist. Takayanagi was part of the influential printmaking group Sosaku Hanga, which emerged in the early 20th century in Japan. This movement emphasized the artist's involvement in every stage of the printmaking process, from designing the image to carving and printing the blocks. Takayanagi's work often incorporates elements of nature and landscape, with an emphasis on texture and pattern. He also experimented with collage, incorporating found materials like newspaper clippings and photographs into his prints. Takayanagi's work has been exhibited extensively in Japan and internationally, including at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo. He has also received numerous awards for his contributions to printmaking, including the Japan Print Association Award and the Purple Ribbon Medal...

"Dusk in August" from the Portfolio of Nine
By Louise Nevelson
Located in Hinsdale, IL
NEVELSON, LOUISE (1899-1988) "Dusk in August" Lithograph in colors, 1967 Signed, dated, titled, and numbered in pencil lower margin This impression is XVIII/XX Sheet Size: 17” x 22” Published by Hollander’s Workshop with their blindstamp This lithograph by Louise Nevelson was made in collaboration with eight other artists in 1967. The other artists included in this portfolio collaboration are Roy Lichtenstein, Louise Nevelson, Willem de Kooning, Robert Motherwell, Henry Pearson, Sam Francis, Richard Lindner, and Saul Steinberg. Louise Nevelson is one of American’s foremost artists, Nevelson’s sculpted wood assemblages transcended space and transformed the viewer’s perception of art. She was an American sculptor best known for her monochromatic wooden assemblages. During the 1950s, she began to create unique arrangements contained in wooden frames amassed from a range of found objects—usually woodcuts or bits of furniture—that were then painted a uniform black, white, or gold, as seen in her seminal work Royal Tide I (1960). Louise Nevelson emerged in the art world amidst the dominance of the Abstract Expressionist movement. In her most iconic works, she utilized wooden objects that she gathered from urban debris piles to create her monumental installations - a process clearly influenced by the precedent of Marcel Duchamp's found object sculptures and "readymades." Nevelson’s prints share with her sculpture an interest in silhouetted forms and the layering of elements, but distinguish themselves by their vivid color, depth and movement.. Louise Nevelson experimented in several different print mediums. A 1963 Ford Foundation grant enabled June Wayne of the Tamarind Lithography Workshop, Los Angeles, to extend an invitation to Nevelson. This initial collaboration led to twenty six lithographs, mostly black with dark blue or red, which combined hand-drawn elements with printed lace. Nevelson returned to Tamarind in 1967 to complete sixteen large scale lithographs know as Double Imagery. In these lithographs Nevelson played with landscapes of shadows and reflections using irregular shaped papers and a limited palette of black, red, grey and blue. For her brilliant compositions in varied mediums critics hailed her as the leading sculptor of the twentieth century. A pioneering grand dame of the art works, Nevelson’s iconic persona was characterized by her skilled mixing and matching of ethnic clothing...
