Winter Pasture
By Oscar Edmund Berninghaus
Located in Missouri, MO
Oscar E. Berninghaus (American, 1874-1952) "Winter Pasture" Oil on Canvas Unframed: 20 x 24 inches Framed: 25.5 x 29.5 inches Provo: Noonan-Kocian Gallery, St. Louis, Missouri, Dec. 23, 1954 (Copy of Original Receipt Included) * Will be included in Kodner Gallery's upcoming Oscar E. Berninghaus Research Project on the artist A founder in 1898 of the Taos Society of Artists, Oscar Berninghaus excelled at drawing animals and figures in contemporary garb in Southwestern landscapes. Many of his early paintings were Impressionistic, "suffused with color and light". (Gerdts 254) He was born in St. Louis, Missouri and developed an interest in art through his family's lithography business. He attended night classes at the St. Louis School of Fine Art. In 1898, he was on an illustration assignment for "McClure's" magazine, which took him for the first of many times into New Mexico and Arizona. He had heard of the special beauty of Taos and there met Bert Geer Phillips, who was already a resident, and Phillips invited him to return. This visit began a tradition of spending the winter months in St. Louis and the summers in Taos. He remained active in both communities, and for many years designed the costumes and floats for the Veiled Prophet parade, a famous annual event in St. Louis. He also did a series of western scenes commissioned by the Anheuser-Busch Brewing Association to promote a manly, ruggedness theme in their products and to enhance their image as good Americans, an image that was being attacked by suffragettes. In this capacity and without visiting the area, Berninghaus did a painting titled "Old Faithful, Yellowstone" in 1914, which was used as a calendar illustration in the series. Berninghaus was a sketch artist for the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad to depict landscape of Colorado...

Jefferson Market Library (Courthouse)
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This painting is part of our exhibition America Coast to Coast: Artists of the 1930s Jefferson Market Library (Courthouse), c. 1930s, oil on canvas, 30 x 24 inches, signed lower right; presented in a newer silver painted frame About the Painting Writing about an exhibition of Charles W. Adams’ work at the Eighth Street Art Gallery in the mid-1930s, Emily Grenauer observed in The World-Telegram that the artist’s paintings were “distinguished for their solid form, well organized design and sumptuous color” and the art critic for The Herald Tribune found Adam’s work “a strong, formal realization of his subject . . . he paints with vital emphasis on structure and composition.” Although we do not know which works these critics referenced, it is likely they were writing about paintings like Jefferson Market Library (Courthouse). With its carefully designed reality, strong angles, solid forms, and well-disciplined puffs of smoke in the background, Adams presents a highly structured version of the Greenwich Village landmark, the Jefferson Market Library, which was a courthouse at the time Adams completed this work. The Jefferson Market Library was a prized subject for downtown painters, including the Ashcan School painter, John Sloan, the modernist, Stuart Davis, and the precisionist, Francis Criss...

Trees at Bloom
By Clarence Holbrook Carter
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Trees at Bloom, 1939, oil on canvas, 32 x 24 inches, signed lower right About the Painting Trees at Bloom was painted when Clarence Holbrook Carter lived in Pittsburgh and served as an instructor in the Department of Painting and Design at the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie-Mellon University), a position he held from 1938 through 1944. It depicts a thick forest at the base of distance hills just outside the city. During his tenure in Pittsburgh, Carter was deeply influenced by not only the industrial might of the steel mills and iron forges of the city, but also the beauty of the surrounding landscape. As Frank Anderson Trapp noted in his book on the artist, for Carter “the terrain itself had its own special vitality, with its craggy, wooded hills threaded with ravine and watercourses . . . . the signs of industrial blight that were unalleviated in some parts of the country were there relieved by the geological variety of the parent landscape, and by the irrepressible presence of its natural growth, which softened the whole.” Trapp continues, “in his scenes of rural situations, Carter had a special gift for rendering those elements convincingly.” With the profusion of flowering trees which diffuse the light and the red cardinals darting from one branch to another, Trees at Bloom portrays the “irrepressible presence of nature” that Trapp describes. About the Artist Together with Charles Burchfield, Clarence Holbrook Carter was Ohio’s premiere American Scene painter and later an innovative magic realist. The son of a no-nonsense public-school administrator, Carter was born in 1904 outside of Portsmouth, Ohio, a small town in the heart of the Ohio River...

Moonlight Shanties
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Moonlight Shanties, c. 1940s, oil on canvas, 24 x 18 inches, signed lower right, signed and titled verso About the Painting In Moonlight Shanties, Joachim depicts a lower-class neighborhood sitting along-side an elevated road or railway which crowds out the small nearby houses and structures. Joachim’s use of an expressionist palette and gestural brushstrokes together with the isolated figures obscured in the shadows, create a feeling of unease, isolation and even loneliness. From the 1920s through 1940s, American artists commonly employed expressionist conventions in their social realist works which portrayed the gritty side of urban America, especially the communities of the city-dwelling poor. Expressionist styles were considered appropriate for bridging the gap between the modernist idea of art-for-art’s-sake and the narrative qualities demanded by the dual crises of the Great Depression and World War II. Moonlight Shanties successfully uses these expressionist methods to portray a neighborhood and its people who appear to be literally and figuratively “on the edge.” About the Artist Paul Lamar Joachim...

Bullfighting by Oscar E. Berninghaus
By Oscar Edmund Berninghaus
Located in New Orleans, LA
Oscar E. Berninghaus 1874-1952 American Bullfighting Signed “O-E-BERNINGHAUS” (lower right) Oil on canvas "The canvases that come from Taos are as definitely American as anything can be. We have had French, Dutch, Italian, German art. Now we must have American art." — Oscar E. Berninghaus, as quoted in Pioneer Artists of Taos This impressive oil on canvas by the revered painter Oscar E. Berninghaus, entitled Bullfighting, captures the magnificent and complex American Southwest. Astonishing in size, technique and color, this painting is a masterful representation of the Hispanic culture that inspired Berninghaus’ beloved New Mexico. Permeated with palpable sensitivity and compelling preservation of his subjects’ traditions and culture, Bullfighting depicts a traditional Spanish bullfight in full swing. Two decoratively clad matadors surround a raging bull on the ground as a matador on horseback makes his strike. Six other matadors look on from inside the vibrant, fully-packed arena. The arena’s architecture is suggestive of distinctive Spanish design, a nod to the European settlers who infused Taos with their traditions and culture. Berninghaus began his career as a lithograph illustrator, later studying the masters of Impressionism, Realism, Representationism and Naturalism at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts. By the young age of 25, Berninghaus had his first solo exhibition and taught at his alma mater. In 1899, the artist began his first Western adventure by sitting on a chair fixed on the roof of a train and sketching the mountainous landscape as it passed by. Overcome by the beauty of Taos, New Mexico, Berninghaus vowed to return. After traveling between Taos and St. Louis for decades, Berninghaus ultimately moved in 1925 to live amongst the electric gathering of Mexican, Native American, European and American people who called Taos home. Fascinated by the adobe architecture, mountains, sage and Pueblo peoples, Berninghaus effectively caught the “Taos germ” and was instrumental in helping the small town become the artistic epicenter of the Southwestern culture. Of the six founders of the Taos Society of Artists, Berninghaus was the only American and quickly became the most critically acclaimed and successful. He demonstrated the greatest passion for establishing positive relationships with the Pueblo people. Throughout his career, Berninghaus received remarkable acclaim. His prizes include a selected design for the commemorative medal...
