Robert Gallon

British, 1845-1925

Robert Gallon was born in England in 1845. One of the finest late Victorian landscape painters, Gallon’s skill and attention to detail was comparable to that of his contemporary Benjamin Williams Leader. Between 1868–1903, Gallon exhibited 32 works at the Royal Academy of Arts and 27 at the British Institution in London.

Original Painting "Laying in Wait" by Ron Crooks
By Ron Crooks
Located in Coeur d'Alene, ID
Oil on canvas; Framed. Ron painted about 200 oils of Western scenes a year. "I picked Western subjects because they let the artist use landscape, people, storytelling…I think the peak in art was the French Impressionist," he observes. "It is a looseness in style and the paintings that border abstract. I hope my style goes that way. My feeling is that if an artist lives to be 200, he becomes an abstract painter, boiling down all he wants to interpret into his abstract essence. Basically, all painting is abstract. A good painting is a good abstraction." Period: Last half of the 20th century. Origin: Otis, Oregon Size: 30" x 40"; Frame 36" x 46" Family Owned & Operated Cisco’s Gallery deals in the rare, exceptional, and one-of-a-kind pieces that define the history of America and the Old West. Abstract American Modernist Oil Painting "Dressing for the Party" by Zoute 1951
By Zoute' (Leon Salter)
Located in Rochester, NY
Abstract Modernist oil painting by Zoute dated 1951. Oil on Masonite. I believe the subject in the painting is the artist's wife Thelma Salter. Zoute used himself and his wife almost exclusively as models. Painted in 1951. Unframed. Zoute (Born-Leon Salter, 1903-1976) was self-taught and well exhibited during his lifetime. He painted from 1940-1954 (he stopped painting at this later date due to his wife's illness and death and never painted again) A self-taught artist, he was part of the great modern wave. He exhibited with many of the most notable artists of the day such as Picasso, Braque, Klee and others at the invitation only State University of Iowa International Show 1946-1947. He had numerous one man shows at NYC galleries, Mortimer Levitt / Joseph Heller...

"The Sawmill" by Robert Gallon, Oil Landscape Painting c. 1884
By Robert Gallon
Located in Shippensburg, PA
The opposite view of this exceptional painting by Robert Gallon is held in the Lancaster Maritime Museum in Lancaster, United Kingdom; this work is painted from the opposite side, looking down the river at the mill and bridge from above the dip in the river. A work of unreal quality and detail, the finely executed landscape captures the incredible diversity of color in the foliage and forest behind the old sawmill. The rugged and aged exterior of the mill is captured perfectly, the worn stone beautifully rendered under the crackling wooden roof shingles. The horses and figures beside the mill are difficult to make out, but the story is completed in the opposite view, where the white horse pulls a large wagon with a gnarled and long tree trunk tied to the structure, a man on top of the cart unstrapping the log to be processed in the mill. It leads the viewer of the present example to wonder if the lone figure captured on the bridge is actually Robert Gallon superimposing himself into the scene, as that is exactly the vantage point the second painting would have been pictured from. This work is being sold in it’s current unrestored condition (see notes below), but we can certainly make arrangements to have it fully cleaned and restored for you upon request (this can have up to six months of processing time depending on our conservator’s schedule). It presents in a most powerful way, being housed in an early and finely hand-carved gilded frame with hints of the red bole coming through the brilliant burnished surface. The back of the painting retains an early Christies label with reference number EV349; the reverse of the canvas retains the original stamp from painting supply...
