Chinese Late Republic Period Bowl On Stand Decorated in Enamel Colors
About the Item
This nice medium-sized bowl has underglaze and overglaze painted details and was made circa 1945 to 1950. It is decorated in an asymmetrical pattern of prunus and chrysanthemums with one pheonix resting on a branch. The inside is decorated at the top with a wide-rimmed patterned border in underglaze iron-red separated by floral sprays in enamel colors set onto the white ground while the bottom and lower sides of the bowl are spattered with flower blossoms in under glazed iron red. The bowl is further decorated with small areas of gilding to the rim and cartouches. Resting on a very nice rosewood base that is well carved and beautifully proportioned the bowl makes a lovely statement while not being overly complicated or embellished. The colors are bright with no damage or cracks with the gilding bight but with some small rub thrus to small areas. The stand has a good old finish.

- Period Victorian Pontypool Tole Tray on Later StandLocated in Hudson, NYThis lovely old tray made circa 1860 is inlaid with mother of pearl and tole decorated with flowers set into a lustrous lacquer surface applied to the tinware tray. The flowers are painted in a lively and realistic manner and the tray is further decorated with a meandering border of flowers and vines in gilding and colors along the edge of the dished section of the tray and then again on the broad flat area of the tray's edge. The stand in a Regency form is also decorated in similar colors and with gold. The tray has a label from the 1840s affixed to the reverse that says it was restored and most likely at that time the stand was fashioned and painted to accompany the tray. - Meiji Period Satsuma Patch BoxLocated in Hudson, NYThis small detailed work made between 1890 and 1900 is skillfully painted representing a court lady in regal costumes being attended to by a small child carrying a bolt of silk cloth. This centered in a medallion where the raised decoration is heavily embellished with gold and patterned details. The round outer area is done in a cobalt blue with more goldwork designs and the interior of the box holds small painted objects as symbols of refinement and or beauty. The box is signed by the painter's hand but as yet we have not translated or matched it to a specific maker's work. Wares of this type are most often produced in the city of Kagoshima in Kyushu province during the Meiji period and reflects the export industry designed to cater to western tastes but not particularly bought by Japanese citizens. Patch boxes...Category
