Pair of Vintage Japanese Bronze Usubata, Showa, Mid-20th Century, Japan

About the Item

A striking and stylish pair of vintage Japanese cast and patinated bronze usubata, vessels for ikebana flower arranging, early to mid-20th century, Japan. The pair of tall vessels each in two sections. The vessel of circular form with a deep well that nests into the tall stand. The tall stand is shaped like a goblet, with a splayed foot tapering upwards to support the deep cup. A pair of handles of geometric Greek key design grace the sides of the vases. The juxtaposition of the round vessel and the straight lines of the handles takes cues from Art Deco design and creates a wonderful balance of form. The bronze patinated with a complex and mottled verdigris.
