About
Japan, a fine pair of old and substantial, handcrafted wooden "Bride and Groom" Kokeshi dolls, signed, circa Mid-Century Modern, mid-20th century. One-of-a-kind pair.
Wonderful simple early designs hand painted in muted white and black colors. Artisan signed.
Provenance: From a private American Japanese Kokeshi doll collection.
Japan’s Kokeshi Dolls.
Kokeshi are Japanese dolls originally from northern Japan. They are handmade from wood, have a simple trunk and an enlarged head with a few thin, painted lines to define the face. One characteristic of kokeshi dolls is their lack of arms or legs. They were originally a toy for a small child and generally have thin terminal areas. Today they are widely collected and variations are numerous. Our early and choice examples were acquired from private Japanese- American collections.
We have been dealing in authentic Japanese and Chinese Fine art, antiquities, garden ornaments, contemporary art, lanterns and water basins for 25 years. Our president personally travels to China and Japan each year to meet his network partners who assist him in finding best examples. He personally inspects each antique work of art to ensure its old age, authenticity, and quality condition.
Lifetime guarantee of authenticity: All of our Asian works of art come with our "Lifetime Authenticity Guarantee."
