French Art Deco Verrerie D'Art Degue Centerpiece Bowl in Art Glass and Iron

About the Item

A signed Verrerie D'Art Degué French Art Deco centerpiece bowl fitted within a decorative iron carrier, dating circa 1930. The large art glass bowl in autumnal shades of vibrant yellow with red and brown accents bears a Degué signature etched in script on one side. The wrought iron basket frame rests on a circular foot and features an arched handle with crimped details and applied stems and leaves. The design was produced for a tabletop and makes a striking focal point for a console, coffee, or a Thanksgiving dining table. The centerpiece in good condition with some corrosion visible on the metalwork and a small (0.25 in.) and smooth circular flake of glass loss at one edge (pictured). The metal frame measures 16.5 inches (at widest part of handle) x 10.5 inches high; the glass bowl measures 9.75 in. diameter x 3 in. height. David Gueron (1892 – 1950) opened Verrerie D'Art Degué and a gallery showroom in Paris in 1926. The Degué glassworks produced a wide range of luxury art glass during the Art Deco period and is perhaps best known for thousands of individual panels they created for the famed French ocean liner, Normandie. Degué glass was widely admired for its high-quality and vibrant colors which were often combined with natural motifs. The company eventually succumbed to the economic pressures stemming from the Great Depression, the beginning of WWII, and a lengthy litigation process with rival glass companies, closing permanently in 1939.
