"Trophy Bowl for Billy Direct, " Art Deco Silver Bowl for Champion Horse, 1938

About the Item

A stunning work of art and a significant historic memorial to a great moment in horse racing history, this silver plated bowl by International Silver was given by The National Trotting Association to D. J. McConnville and P. J. Downey in 1938. Downey and McConnville were the owners of Billy Direct, who had just beaten the legendary Dan Patch's record by pacing the mile in 1:55 at Lexington. The horse held this record, astonishingly, until 1961; after his racing career, he was exhibited to stud at Peninsular Farms in Freemont, Ohio. The bowl is a classic example of Art Deco silver artisanry, the clean lines of the bowl flanked by two rising angels, each holding a flaming torch symbolizing victory. The bowl is beautifully engraved, and is well marked on the bottom.
