Georgian Spode Ironstone Shell Dish or Plate Bang Up Pattern No. 2886, Ca 1820

About the Item

This is an early 19th century stone china (Ironstone pottery) desert dish with a fluted shell shape, produced by Spode and dating from the George 111rd period, circa 1820. It is decorated in one of Spode's chinoiserie influenced floral patterns called the Bang Up pattern and is pattern number 2886. The pattern is carefully hand-painted in bold enamels over a blue transfer printed underglaze outline, with good detail as is usual with Spode wares. Similar Spode dishes of the same shape can be seen in Steven Smith's, Spode and Copeland book- published by Schiffer, Pages 31 and 57 and this Pattern is shown on a cup and saucer in the same book, page 58. The dish is fully marked to the base with Spode's blue printed Stone China mark with the pattern number, 2886, hand-painted in red above.
