Coromandel Dome Top Antique Jewelry Box

About the Item

This large English Victorian jewelry box dates from the 1870s. It has a beautifully curved dome-shaped lid, rare in a box of this impressive size. The exterior is veneered in highly figured coromandel wood with brass binding to the entire perimeter and elegant double brass stringing to the front, top and back of the box. Much of the brass edging is attractively engraved. The ornate circular monogram inlaid into the lid has also been engraved with a matching pattern. The interior of the box is relined and ruched with burgundy velvet, and partitioned into eight compartments with gold-tooled dividers. The brass hinges, inlaid mounts and Bramah lock, each retaining their original gilding, are beautifully engraved with floral details. The Bramah lock, with its original key, works perfectly. The engraving is most remarkable on the gilded brass-framed mirror that sits neatly inside the domed lid. A hidden button drops the mirror forward. On its reverse is a ruched velvet panel set into a coromandel frame with double brass stringing. A secret leather-bound wallet sits behind the mirror. A push-button to the left side of the box releases a side drawer, which is lined with matching velvet and divided into two compartments. A further push-button on the rear rim of the box releases a large front drawer, containing a generously sized compartment to the front, three smaller compartments to the rear, and a ring and/or cuff-link channel. Unusually, the side and back panels of the drawers are made from coromandel – an expensive choice of wood for drawers. Likewise, the interior sides of the lid are veneered in coromandel, with the added luxury of double brass stringing inlay. Both signs of a box of the finest quality box.
