English 19th Century Trinity House Dressing Box with Three Masted Schooner Inlay

About the Item

English rosewood 19th century Trinity House dressing box with perspective cube inlay to three sides and a British three masted square rigged schooner inlaid to the top; she is sailing on a white capped sea. Various woods were used for the inlays including ebony, rosewood, walnut, satinwood, boxwood and sycamore. The interior is original with tartan paper in the top and a lift out dressing tray with three lidded inlaid compartments . Circa 1870 Trinity House is the name for the lighthouse keepers service, members of whom take care of lighthouses and other navigational aides including buoys in shipping channels. Trinity House boxes were beautifully crafted by lighthouse keepers while on station and were primarily marketed to ship captains and owners. They generally depict nautical scenes of ships, shipping and lighthouses. They were also made for gifts for family members.
