19th C Bloodstone Cassolettes with Ormolu Mounts Rams Head Motif Louis XVI Style
About the Item
These fabulous 19th century neoclassical French cassolettes have an athénienne form and are composed of bloodstone ornamented with beautifully detailed ormolu mounts. The green ovoid vessels are flecked with red and are each supported by three gilt bronze legs finished with rams hooves at the bottom and rams heads at the top. A central ring holds the legs firmly in place. The upper portion of the vessels bear wide gilt bronze bands decorated with floral and foliate motifs. The undersides are finished with a series of detailed leaves separated by stems and small berries with pinecone pendants at the centers.
The cassolettes have thick bloodstone plinths carved in a modified triangular shape. The plinths are each ornamented with a row of large gilt bronze beads and are topped with ornate gilt bronze platforms. Each is finished with a large floriform spoke having a rosette at the center along with detailed foliate ornamentation located along the sides.
The vessels have domed bloodstone lids bearing gilt bronze pinecone finials encircled by two rows of overlapping gilt bronze leaves. When inverted and inserted into the bases, the lids serve as taper candle holders. The exterior of the candle sockets bear carved fluted decoration reminiscent of Greek columns and are bordered at the top and bottom by rows of gilt bronze beads. The candle sockets are 1" wide and .75" deep.
These lovely antique bloodstone and gilt bronze cassolettes function well as a decorative accent or can be used to hold candles on a mantelpiece or table. An elegant and useful set.
