Mantel Clock, 19th Century, Napoleon III Period

About the Item

Antique late 19th c. French mantel clock crafted in Louis XVI style richly ornamented with ormolu flower garlands, bows and beaded lines all around the clock’s case. The main feature of this mantel clock is two putti figures reading a book made with brown patinated bronze sitting on a gilded rock-like ground with acanthus leaves. Putti are nude child figures, frequently appearing in mythological and religious paintings or sculptures, they often appeared in goods made in Louis XVI style as it draws inspiration from antiquity. The clock’s case is made out of malachite. According to the concept of ancient empires. Malachite has the effect of warding off evil spirits, bringing luck and prosperity to the owner. On the both side of the dial are ornamental lapis stone rectangles framed in beaded ormolu lines. The dial is enameled with Roman numerals for hours and Arabic numerals for minutes, and is protected with a glass lens. The malachite base is supported by 6 gilded bronze toupie feet. The clock is in excellent and perfect working condition. In addition, it has been cleaned and maintained by a professional watchmaker specializing in museum maintenance. The eight-days going movement. It strikes the every, half hour and hour on it’s bell. The clock comes complete with its pendulum, key and bell.
