French Cold-Painted Bronze and Marble Art Deco Chinoiserie Mantel Clock
About the Item
This rare timepiece, made in France but retailed by the British silversmith Mappin and Webb is the only one of its type we have found. It may be unique. The rectangular dial has Roman numerals on a pale yellow ground, and is supported by a charming pair of Chinese children in brocade gowns, set on an oblong Verde Antico marble base.
We are much taken by both the quality of the workmanship and the charm of the design. It is also pleasant that it makes no sound. Technically this makes it a timepiece rather than a clock. Note the size, it is larger than it appears in the photograph.
