French Art Deco Ormolu "Bronze Dorée" Cartel Sunburst Wall Clock, Circa 1915
About the Item
French Art Deco Ormolu "Bronze Dorée" Cartel Sunburst Wall Clock, Circa 1915.
Since the Louis XIV period the use of Bronze Dorée has been synonymous of high quality and has always been used at important decorative levels. We have seen impressive castle rooms decorated with Bronze Dorée furniture, pictures frames, sculptures and also clocks of different shapes and forms. During the mid 19th Century and throughout the first half of the 20th Century, French artists and artisans continued to produce and re-produce paintings, furniture and works of art inspired by old styles. Sometimes combining the objects with a more modern touch in vogue at the time of the execution, but maintaining the rigorous quality that the public demanded.
This wall clock or Cartel is a classic example. By using the combination of "Bronze Dorée" material common from the Louis XIV period and later, with a more modern "Sunburst" design which was typical of the late 19th Century and through the Art Deco period, the artist achieved to create this high quality and spectacular looking Cartel clock.

The gilded surface of the mirror with the typical Empire period decorations shows us how good quality work can last for long periods of time. The French Empire period or second Neoclassicism was a period that followed the Directoire period. It lasted about 20 years, from 1800 to 1820. The ostentatious look of the works of art, furniture and paintings was exported all over Europe and the United States. The general representation followed the styles of ancient Rome, Greece and Egypt. Sphinxes, swans, lions, cornucopias, rosettes, Greek dancers, antique chariots...Category
