Hagenauer Bookends Pair Leaping Gazelles Wien Made in Austria

About the Item

Hagenauer bookends pair leaping gazelles. Original had rubbed brass patina finish—stylized Haenauer animals, four of them intertwined and perfectly proportioned. The size is just enough to support books and still look sculptural and elegant. Both items are stamped on the flat side where you rest the books. “WHW” Made in Austria. The Hagenauer firm was founded by Carl Hagenauer in Austria, in 1898. His son Karl became the head of the company in 1928 after having studied with Joseph Hoffman and winning bronze and silver medals at the Paris Exposition of 1925. His work was most prolific, including many “useful objects” such as mirrors, cigar cutters, bookends, and hood ornaments. He produced humorous and playful figures as well as highly stylized ultra-modern sculptures. He managed Hagenauer Werkstatte until his death in 1956. His younger brother, Franz, focused more specifically on sculpture, often drawing from African art as his inspiration. His long life ( 1906-1986 ) provided him with a long career and many of the most elegant Hagenauer pieces can be attributed to Franz. Though both Karl and Franz produced many animal pieces, beautiful female forms were a specialty of Franz’s. Spanish dancers, models, mythical goddesses, and African natives were sources for his design.

  • Popeye Sailor European Sculpture Ebony and Metal Art Deco Hagenauer
    By Werkstätte Hagenauer Wien
    Located in Oakland, CA
Popeye the Sailor, a European Sculpture in the style of Hagenauer made of Ebony wood and Metal in the Art Deco style. We have had a few pieces in this treatment, style and materials. They are very rare to find. This one is particularly interesting since it is an homage to the character of Popeye. This sculpture has a slightly cubist feeling with the treatment of black ebony and silver including the navy anchor on its arm obviously inspired by the original Popeye. It’s not a widely known fact that a real person inspired E.C. Segar, the creator of Popeye. We have discovered was fashioned to resemble this man Frank “Rocky” Fiegel, whose parents immigrated from Poland to the United States. Rocky was born in 1868-1947 and as an adult he joined the navy. He was considered very strong and smoked a pipe, all characteristics of the cartoon Popeye which became such an important icon of protection, not allowing bullying or to be bulled. This Popeye Sailor sculpture...
