'Echo Chamber' Ceramic Interactive Sculpture by Carlo Lorenzetti, 2019

About the Item

‘Echochamber’ by Carlo Lorenzetti, 2019 Turquoise and white milky glazed stoneware A vessel that you sit against and talk into, either by yourself or with another person. The term “echo chamber” is used most commonly today to described a closed off conceptual space where new ideas do not enter and an existing confirmation bias is reinforced. It is often used in reference to social media platforms where users choose to subscribe to outlets and content which fit with their beliefs, and willfully ignore ones that are apposed to or challenge them. While the thing I made does nothing to address the topic in regards to what happens on, for instance, Twitter, it does in a basic way force an individual to listen to someone else (whom may or may not be a stranger to that person in the public/exhibition context). Alternate descriptions: (1) A vessel that you sit against and talk into, either by yourself or with another person. (2) The echo chamber, a large ceramic vessel, is a tool for closed loop communication for a lone person or pair of individuals. When two visitors enter, they can communicate without seeing each other as pipes connect the ear of one with the mouth of the other, and vice versa. All the pipes feed to the middle of the body where they reverberate and travel. A circle is created, a loop between what is said and heard.

The idea was born after deciding to reconnect with my family and my grandfather – a sculptor artist. Learning to sculpt and being a designer compelled me to combine these two mediums and use their best values. Experimenting with the functionality of sculpture and the meaning of furniture led me to create the collection. Studio AOAO is an interdisciplinary studio combining art and design. It was created by Alicja Strzyzynska and Onur Iseri in Amsterdam in 2020. “We specialise in making sculptural pieces by experimenting with the functionality of sculpture and the meaning of furniture. In our works, we focus on the emotional connection between the object and the user. All of our work seeks the experience of intimacy and the metaphysical bond between personal interaction and meaningful narrative. Through sculptural value and reflective design, we aim to create pieces that last for generations and help reduce environmental waste.” The inspiration to sculpt came from Alicja’s roots, her grandfather – an artist sculptor. Alicja completed Masters of Arts Degree in Product and Visual Communication Design at Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts and finished her bachelor degree in Interior Architecture. Alicja previously worked in Tokyo and Amsterdam in architectural design studios. Onur completed his business studies in Japan and worked in digital design & marketing as well as teaching in Tokyo. The studio’s first collection debuted at Rossana Orlandi Gallery during Milan Design Week 2021. The studio currently collaborates with RO Gallery...
