Early 20th Century Quality Carved Chestnut Dog Bust Bookends on an Oak Base

About the Item

Beautifully carved dog busts bookends. There can be two reasons why we don't know which breed of dogs these quality carved bookends represent. The first one is that we simply lack the knowledge. The second one is that, because many dog breeds have been heavily over-bred, we don't recognize them anymore in this day and age. We have to bear in mind that these finely carved dog busts are almost a hundred years old and the dog breed they represent could have changed significantly. We have seen some shocking examples of such changes on the internet. We do have one lead: according to the former owners, these sculptural bookends were bought in France so the dogs could be a French breed. Whatever breed they are, they look like strong and very alert dogs. Apart from some wear to the points of the ears these carved out of solid chestnut, dog bust bookends are in excellent condition. Mind you, perfect packing and store to door delivery in just 4 days is complimentary. Wherever you may live on our beautiful planet. Maximum height x width x depth: 5.9 x 5.1 x 3.9 inches. We have a passion for the unique, for quality, for stylish yet practical and for craftsmanship of years gone by. Your purchases will be extremely well packaged and we look forward to serving you (again). You can shop all our 600+ listings on 1stdibs by pushing the button that reads 'View All From Seller'.

  • Rare Art Deco Bookends, Indian Sculptures in Meditating Position on Marble Base
    Located in Lisse, NL
Unique on 1stdibs and possibly worldwide. It was in the early 20th century that meditation became known in Western society. Like many artists, the one who handcrafted the sculptures that were used to create these bookends probably traveled through Indonesia or India. These creative minds came back full of inspiration of all they had witnessed, because certainly back then, they entered a whole new world. The meditating males on these marble based bookends are made of silvered brass and the artist perfectly captured their serene faces, their turban head wear and their relaxed bodies. Sitting with their minds at rest and with their consciousness in the entire body or possibly focussed on breathing only, they would certainly arouse interest with western travelers...
