French 19th Century Bronze Signed Waagen of Dog with Huntsman's Kit

About the Item

French 19th century bronze of a large dog, possibly a mastiff, with huntsman's kit sheltering under his large body, as if he is protecting his master in absentia. This substantial bronze is signed Waagen and underneath the casting studio signed LeBlanc. Arthur Waagen was born in Prussia in 1833, but he moved to France to study and work. He maintained a studio in Paris at 40, Cours de Vincennes and exhibited regularly at the Paris Salons from 1869 to 1887. He is known for his powerful images of animals particularly dogs and also for orientalist sculpture involving people and animals, creating a scene. In this sculpture, the presence of man is only indicated by the clothing and kit, this piece is about a dog, his loyalty, his power and his grace. Works by Waagen are in museums and collections on both sides of the Atlantic. Arthur Waagen died in 1898.
