Mottahedeh White Glazed Majolica Recumbent Lion Figure after Kaendler

This large majolica lion figurine was made by Porcelain de Cuernavaca for the Mottahedeh company, known for their ceramic antique reproductions and historic designs. The design was originally executed in the early 18th century by head modeler for the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory, Johann Joachim Kaendler as a part of a nearly 600 piece animal menagerie commissioned by Augustus II the Strong. This regal Mottahedeh ceramic figure has been made in the form of a recumbent lion with its head turned to the right. As seen in the accompanying photographs, the lion's head and mane are quite detailed with particular attention paid to the animal's facial expression. The piece has been finished in cream colored glaze. The underside bears a mark for Mottahedeh Porcelain de Cuernavaca as well as for Mottahedeh Sir Humphrey Wakefield Stately Homes. It also retains its original paper label reading Made in Mexico. A striking and unusual piece.
