"Aquarius," Rare Art Deco Bronze Bas Relief with Nude Male by Manship, 1946

Boldly and brilliantly sculpted in high relief, this depiction of Aquarius -- the water bearer, a mystical healer who bestows water upon the land -- shows a bearded, nude male figure pouring water from a large urn, with a fish beneath him. This rare bronze was sculpted by Paul Manship, no doubt the most important American sculptor creating high style Art Deco works in the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s. This bronze dish is one of a set of 12 Zodiac dishes sculpted in 1946, and is signed and dated. Manship is perhaps best known for his magisterial "Prometheus" sculpture at Rockefeller Centre in New York, which now presides over the skating rink in winter time. The sculptor also created other works for Rockefeller Centre, as well as major pieces for the Bronx Zoo and Central Park Zoo; the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland; and Cochran Park in St. Paul, Minnesota.
