"Bliss, " Unique and Early Bronze of Female Nude by John Gregory, 1907

About the Item

A beautiful and sublime personification of contentment and bliss, this bronze was sculpted by John Gregory -- who later executed 9 large bas relief panels for the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C. -- when he was only 28 years old. Looking upward, with her arms crossed, the nude figure may represent a wood sprite or another mythical creature, given that she seems to have leaves woven into her hair. Gregory is known for his "Orpheus" bronze at Brookgreen Gardens in South Carolina, and an equestrian sculpture of General Anthony Wayne at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The sculpture is cast in bronze and retains a deep, lustrous patina. It was cast by America's leading art bronze foundry -- the Roman Bronze Works -- whose name is scripted into the bronze.

    By John Gregory
    Located in Philadelphia, PA
An extraordinary piece of American sculpture, this depiction of a young woman, dated 1930, was sculpted in white marble by John Gregory -- who executed 9 large bas relief panels for the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C. -- for Paul Philippe Cret, who was the Library's architect. Clearly Gregory and Cret were friends as well as colleagues, and this sculpture may have been executed as a gesture of appreciation from Gregory to Cret; indeed, the Library's cornerstone was laid the same year this sculpture was created. Gregory is also known for his "Orpheus" bronze at Brookgreen Gardens in South Carolina, and an equestrian sculpture of General Anthony Wayne...
