"Nursing Mother in Africa, " Rare Cubist-Art Deco Bronze Sculpture, Prob. Belgium

About the Item

Clearly influenced by the geometric forms and exaggerations of French Cubism, this rare and striking bronze presents an African mother nursing her child, her body lean and angular, her posture protective and nurturing. It's ironic that French and Belgian Cubists, taking much of their inspiration from African tribal art, began to depict Africans in their paintings and sculpture in the 1910s and 1920s, inspired no doubt by the people they ruled in their colonies throughout the continent. We have never seen this sculpture before, and though the signature is hard to decipher, we believe that it was created by a Belgian or French artist.

A brilliant example of early French cubist sculpture, this depiction of an African drummer, her hands beating the two-sided drum and her head looking up as she sings or chants to the music, illustrates the fractured, reinvented reality that Picasso and Braque invented just ten or twenty years before. The abstracted breasts of the figure bring to mind the mature Cubism of Ossip Zadkine, Jean Souverbie...
