Ferdinand Barbedienne Set of Gilt Bronze-Mounted Champleve Onyx Garniture

About the Item

This is a Ferdinand Barbedienne set of gilt bronze-mounted champleve onyx garniture. It consist of two urns and one large oval vase/jardiniere. The vase is adorned with a chain of gilt beads in its rim and from its gilt bronze scroll-rectangular handles come out some acanthus leaves that rest in the fluted onyx neck. Both handles are adorned with some acanthus leaves finials. Below the neck, in the center of the vase, there is a turquoise, green, yellow and gold wide champleve enamel band with scrolls and a chain of purple flowers around it. A gilt garland of roses decorate the ribbed base of the vase hanging from the lion paw feet of it. The vase stands in a cross shaped alabaster pedestal. The urns follow the same decoration as the vase with some exceptions. They have a gilt bronze stoppers made of acanthus leaves with acorn finials. Their long necks are also adorned with a champleve enamel band. From their garlands of acanthus leaves come out some beads and they Stand over an octagonal base with four acanthus leaves scrolls feet. The urns are hallmarked F. Barbedienne.
