18th Century Handcrafted Spanish Copper Jug / Pitcher / Container with Handle

About the Item

Hammered, riveted and soldered in 18th century Spain, this copper container was made for common household use, but with its sculptural form, rich color and patina of age it surpasses its rough beginnings to become a thing of beauty. The handle is attached with large hammered rivets, and features a small hook for hanging near the top. Around the center of the jug at its widest point, is a fine geometric, zig-zagging "dovetail seam" where two pieces of copper were "cramped" or hammered together to form the curve, while molten brass would be dripped into the seam and smoothed over to strengthen the joint. Creating a seam in this way was strictly a hand process, and the particularly small size of the interlocking pieces demonstrates a high level of skill and craftsmanship. There is also another dovetail where the bottom is attached. On one side there is a period repair where the seam has been re-soldered, a bit less artfully. These repairs are fairly common on older copper pieces, and testify to their value, a copper jug with a hole would not be simply discarded, but repaired for further use.
