Glazed Ceramic Jar Studio Pottery Karen Karnes

About the Item

A ceramic (earth ware) lidded jar with glazed surface by American studio potter Karen Karnes (1925-2016). The mark on the jar indicates that the piece was made circa 2000s. The wheel-thrown piece shows off a beautiful form with a swell body and harmonious proportion, reminiscent of the vernacular jars one would find in Asian kitchens for fermenting and storage. The surface is covered with an orange color shino-like glaze and painted with abstract strokes, which clearly inspired by Japanese Mingei pottery such as the work by Shoji Hamada. Heavily influenced by Japanese Mingei folk-art movement, the artist also took inspiration of her work in American craft by incorporating certain shapes and functionality in her work and use salt in the glaze firing as well. For the detailed biography of the artist, please refer to the Marks Project page.
