19th Century Pair of French Patinated Bronze Lidded Cups or Urns

About the Item

This is a pair of patinated bronze cups with covers. A repousse of ivy leaves garland decorates the center of the cups’ body. Above and below it, there are a chain of beads adorning it. Below them, there is a repousse of a head-face of a woman in the front and back. The cups have a baluster shaped stems also decorated with leaves that end in a round bases. These bases are attached to round and octagonal black marbles adorned with bronze beads chain ornament. There are C-scrolls shaped handles with leaves at both side of the cups. Both covers are embellished by a relief of philodendron garlands, chased of branches of leaves and a chain of beads. Also, they end with a finial made of parts of different animals (head of a fox or wolf, upper body and one leg of an eagle, lower body and another leg of a reptile).

    Wear consistent with age and use. These are very old pieces and they have been kept in excellent condition, except for one of the marble bases that has a crack in its lateral side. But the piece stands very firm and this does not affect its decorative look.

    This is a pair of Sevres hand painted porcelain turquoise lidded urns. Both of them are depicting in the front a sea shore fishermen scenes. In one, a group of fishermen are preparing a sailboat and in the other one, they are pulling the net. The back are adorned with some gilt fishing tools and baskets with foliages. Both scenes are golden framed with scrolls of acanthus and flowers beside them. Gilt white concave long oval shaped rings alternated with gilt foliages and shamrocks decorate the necks of the urns. The same pattern are repeated in the lids, but no white color in the center. The bell shaped lids ended with pinecones finials. A mix of scrolls and Greek keys serve as handles.
