Pair of Islamic Enameled Vessels, Ancient Urns
About the Item
This is an exceptional and historic pair of Damascus enameled metalwork vessels or urns. These art objects show signs of rough use and handling through the centuries. Although it is almost impossible to determine the age of enameled metalwork, these copper urns with Arabic inscriptions date from at least the 15th-16th century. The brightly colored, rather crude enamel in thick encrusted application is set in cobalt blue. They are as brilliant today as they were centuries ago.
The copper is decorated in brilliant colors with intricate designs. Islamic art demands the absence of figures which are replaced by the extensive use of geometric and abstract floral patterns. The use of enameling art in the Islamic culture is known as early as the 2nd century B.C.. Because the enamels are so delicate most of the object d’art have been destroyed or kept safe in museums. They are, consequently rare and hard to find. The traditional decorations have continued into the 19th century.
Condition: Fair. The neck of both urns are pressed down. Cause is unknown. Latest, our ongoing research leads to the possibility that these urns were excavated, which explains the damage. Some roughness and some enamel is flaked off. Antique condition. Wear as expected.
