Baccarat Crystal Blue-over-clear Etched and Acid Washed Frosted Covered Vase

About the Item

A spectacular and important 19th century Louis XVI style baccarat double-overlay blue-over-clear wheel carved, etched and acid washed covered vase, attributed to Jean Baptiste Simon. This vase is exceptionally made with double-overlay blue-over-clear crystal design which has been hand-carved, etched, and acid-washed creating a three-dimensional frosted textured consistency. On the body of the vase is an extraordinarily hand-carved, etched and acid-washed portrait of King Julius Cesar. He is seen adorning a Laurel Wreath with a bow holding up the back of his braided hair. Around his neck is a beautifully carved necklace demonstrating his prominence as King. The remaining motifs for the vase include elaborately designed leaves, wreaths, ribbons, and micro-acorns. Each motif design is either etched and acid-washed or clear, giving individual levels of depth and contrast. The extraordinary details found on this vase can only be detailed by the master crystal workers in Baccarat. Each frosted leaf is intricately detailed with vines running through each, giving a life-like appearance. King Caesar's hair is also highly detailed with swirling strands creating a three-dimensional appearance. The top of the cover is adorned with a contrasting blue and clear quilted-acorn finial, providing a final depth of design to this already magnificent vase. Quality and construct like this can only be done by Baccarat, with the artistic talent of Jean Baptiste Simon. JB Simon was one of the greatest crystal carvers to work at Baccarat; with his twin vases titled ‘The Allegory of Water’ and ‘The Allegory of Earth' presented at the Universal Exhibition in Paris, 1867. The quality and craftsmanship of those vases are extremely akin to this spectacular vase. Both are wheel carved, double-overlay with the finest crystal, both have exceptionally finished covers with acorn style finials, and each is marvelously sensationalized with a wide body, layered socle, and base. This pair is now present in the Baccarat Museum in Paris, France. Another example of JB Simon's work is a beautiful triple-layer crystal goblet, with extraordinarily similar motifs and designs. These examples demonstrate provide validity to the attribution of Jean Baptiste Simon's work on the construction of this vase. France, Circa: 1875.
