Hand Painted White Stoneware Flat Vase with Blue Stripes by Alison Owen

About the Item

This hand painted double handled flat vase by Alison Owen is made through Owen's skillful hand-building technique, utilizing thin slabs of white stoneware clay, hand painted on the outside with glaze, and hand-drawn with underglaze pencil, with a clear glaze on the inside. The motif plays on the shape and construction of the piece, as well as more ancient ceramic forms. The canvas texture of the exposed clay shows through giving the piece extra depth and mystery. While the piece works as a decorative object or sculpture, it is also functional, and can be a striking vessel. This piece was included in Owen's solo exhibition "Daily Vase" at Greenpoint Hill. The show was recently featured in Architectural Digest's Clever blog. Owen has recently shown at Cuchifritos, Lesley Heller, Smack Mellon and A.I.R.Gallery in New York, and Staple Goods in New Orleans. Her work at A.I.R. Gallery was featured in the New York Times. Owen creates simple, elegant pieces that allow the nature of the material of the piece to come through. She is inspired by the domestic interiors of Morandi and Bonnard's paintings, ancient Egyptian vessels, and the architectural diversity of her Brooklyn neighborhood. All of these influences come together to create works that are subtly patterned, slightly off-kilter, and satisfying to hold, display, and use. Alison Owen received her MFA from Claremont Graduate University. She has participated in numerous residencies, including Artists Alliance in the Lower East Side, Wave Hill in the Bronx, The Joan Mitchell Center in New Orleans, the Bronx Museum of Art, and foundation id11 in delft , the Netherlands. She was a fellow in the A.I.R. Gallery Fellowship Program in 2017. The Rhode Island State Council for the Arts awarded Owen the New Genres fellowship in 2010. The piece measures 2.25” D x 7.38” W x 11.63” H.
