"Sleeping Figure, " Jewel-Toned Art Deco Vase in Jade, Cobalt and Coral by Cazaux

About the Item

One of the most brilliantly glazed Art Deco pieces we have ever offered, this vase depicts a seated female figure on each side, her head falling down in deep sleep, her jade-green robes deeply glowing. The bas relief figures are set in rondels of deep coral-hued glaze, with a ground of purplish-cobalt blue. The sculptor, Edouard Cazaux, along with his two brothers, became widely known for his Art Deco sculptures and vessels in the late 1920s through the 1930s. The three were a sensation at the 1937 Paris International Exhibition, where they created a fountain for the Basque pavilion, as well as a great ceramic mural. They received the exhibition’s prestigious Gold Medal and Edouard continued to build his reputation in Paris.
