ARTS AND CRAFTS STYLE

Emerging in reaction to industrialization and mass production, the Arts and Crafts movement celebrated handcrafted design as a part of daily life. The history of Arts and Crafts furniture has roots in 1860s England with an emphasis on natural motifs and simple flourishes like mosaics and carvings. This work is characterized by plain construction that showcases the hand of the artisan.

The earliest American Arts and Crafts furniture dates back to the start of the 20th century. Designers working in this style in the United States initially looked to ideas put forth by The Craftsman, a magazine published by Wisconsin native Gustav Stickley, a furniture maker and founder of the Craftsman style. Stickley’s furniture was practical and largely free of ornament. His Craftsman style drew on French Art Nouveau as well as the work he encountered on his travels in England. There, the leading designers of the Arts and Crafts movement included William Morris, who revived historical techniques such as embroidery and printed fabrics in his furnishings, and Charles Voysey, whose minimal approach was in contrast to the ornamentation favored in the Victorian era.

American Arts and Crafts work would come to involve a range of influences unified by an elevation of traditional craftsmanship. The furniture was often built from sturdy woods like oak and mahogany while featuring details such as inlaid metal, tooled leather and ceramic tiles. The style in the United States was led by Stickley, whose clean-lined chairs and benches showcased the grain of the wood, and furniture maker Charles Rohlfs, who was informed by international influences like East Asian and French Art Nouveau design.

Hubs in America included several utopian communities such as Rose Valley in Pennsylvania and the Byrdcliffe Arts and Crafts Colony in New York, where craftspeople made furniture that prioritized function over any decoration. Their work would influence designers and architects including Frank Lloyd Wright, who built some of the most elegant and iconic structures in the United States and likewise embraced a thoughtful use of materials in his furniture.

Bottega Intreccio Woven Wicker 21st Century Mawa Centerpiece, by Setsu & Shinobu
Located in Mogliano, Marche
Mawa “A centerpiece draw its inspiration from Nature. Mawa, narrow at the base and wider towards the top, borrows its features from a flower in all its splendor.” This container reinterprets the archetype of the woven basket in a contemporary way, with ample proportions and organic asymmetrical forms. The wicker is enhanced by a leather band at the base that gives the object decorative impact. The piece is difficult to make precisely due to the asymmetrical form. Use and maintenance All the items are made with raw materials and are guaranteed for interiors. If it is necessary, they can also be installed outdoors as long as they are sufficiently protected from atmospheric agents and not directly exposed to the sunlight or water, in spaces like verandas, gazebos, arcades or protected spaces. The raw materials used for weavings could be not extremely homogeneous due to different physical properties and the items could have dimensions a bit different from descriptions listed in this document. The colors could change for the same reasons. Those features are the demonstration of authenticity of each product that is unique and handcrafted in Italy by Mogliano’s masters. Woven wicker is extremely resistant over the years, if it is stored in a dry place and without excessive temperature changes, and it could also change color or nuances due to its sunlight exposure based-on nature. The weaving by the craftsman is performed with soft and wet material, an the material dries naturally with the passage of time losing its elasticity. For this reason, avoid excessive pressures, overloads of heavy weights or impacts. The bases or wooden parts are entirely in solid wood: with the aging they could change in size and present natural micro-cracks. Avoid direct and long exposure to the sun, completely avoid wetting. About the lamp usage, in normal condition the items don’t require special maintenance. Technicals About item technical details and bulbs specifications, please refer to the technical data sheets. Cleaning Use a soft cloth for cleaning. Don’t use any chemicals, acids, scourers or steel brushes. The base in natural wood must be cleaned and dusted using a soft cloth, even slightly damp. Immediately wipe again with a soft, dry cloth. For lamps cleaning, unplug the appliance from electric power...

Bottega Intreccio Shizé S Woven Wicker 21st Century Centrepiece, SetsuShinobuIto
Located in Mogliano, Marche
Shizé S “The centerpiece draw its inspiration from Nature. The irregular shape of Shizè comes from the stones found in rivers.” Like a big rock sitting on furnishings in the home, this container has a soft, organic form. And it plays with the contrast between the ample size of the woven wicker part and the leather-clad plate that rests on the rim of the vessel. Complex in the making due to the asymmetrical form, and for the so called “passatemorte”, passages where the strand does not complete its circuit. Antique & Impressive, Beautifully Hand Carved Alabaster Set of Ornamental Vases
Located in Lisse, NL
Early 1900s pair of alabaster vases with an alabaster 'fountain' with birds in the middle. Have you ever tried to hand carve a figure out of a piece of natural mineral stone? Only than you can really come close to having an idea of how remarkable this set of vases is. To be able to hand carve these floral motifs out of solid alabaster (and all the way through) with a chisel and some other hand tools, must have taken ages and a whole lot of skill and experience. Imagine making one mistake. . .that would be a bad day at the office for sure. Fortunately this most skillful of carvers kept his focus and produced these very decorative and highly stylish set. One has already been enjoyed well over a century and that can certainly be enjoyed for many more years and by generations to come. The creamy white color, the perfectly carved branch, floral and grape patterns in the pair of vases, they all ad up to the grandeur of this marvelous pair. The fountain centerpiece of this set with the three bathing and drinking birds too comes with neatly carved grape bunches, but have you also noticed the entwined dolphin sculptures in the base? By the way, in images 15 and 16 you can see the backside of the two vases. These works of art truly are a joy to own and look at and you could not wish for more decorative antiques on your sidetable of mantel. This antique set of three is great value for money. Also, because perfect packing (in a custom made box) and also worldwide shipping from our store to your door in just 4 to 6 workdays are included in our fair price. Maximum height x width x depth of the vases: 20.5 x 6.9 x 6.9 inches. Maximum height x diameter of the circular fountain...
