Copeland Spode Ceramic Bread and Butter Plates in "Buttercup" Pattern, Set of 11
About the Item
A set of 11 bread and butter plates by Copeland for Spode. This set features 11 round plates with a yellow, blue, and green floral pattern on a cream background. A basketweave design surrounds the rim, while the edges are scalloped. Three of the plates are slightly different than the other 8, as they feature a slightly curled up edge, with a small scallop texture in the middle.
The earliest record of Buttercup is hand-painted on bone china in 1885. It is thought to have been designed by Francis Xavier Abrahams, who worked at Copeland's between 1882 and 1902 and was for a short time Art Director. Following the engraving of a copper plate for printing, Buttercup appeared in its popular form on earthenware and on the Chelsea Wicker shape. A different version known as Mandalay was produced in reds and browns, while Primose featured blues. The pattern was also produced using the name Wicker Dell from 1962 to 1964.
