Georgian Mason's Ironstone Side Plate in Basket Japan Gilded Pattern, circa 1816

About the Item

This is an early Mason's ironstone side plate hand finely hand painted in the very decorative Basket Japan gilded pattern, produced by the Mason's factory at Lane Delph, Staffordshire, England, circa 1813-1820. The plate is circular with a notched indented rim. This plate is well decorated in one of Mason's most collected patterns called "Basket Japan" gilded pattern. The pattern is hand painted, over-glaze in rich cobalt blues and burnt orange, all in varying shades, possibly over an under-glaze printed outline and with hand gilded highlights. The base has the circular impressed mark "PATENT IRONSTONE CHINA" which is recorded as being probably the earliest impressed factory mark, indicating a date of circa 1813-1820 as ironstone was only produced by them from 1813, which is late George 111 period. This plate exhibits the quality and boldness of the hand painting that is seen on the early Mason's pieces.
