"Herald of Peace, " Unique Art Deco Tile with Fox and Chickens by ICS, Italy

About the Item

Designed and glazed by an artist with humor and perhaps a bit of irony, this charming tile was made by the famed Industria Ceramica Salernitana (ICS) pottery in the 1930s. Entitled "Praeco Pacis," or "Herald of Peace," the artist presents a fox who is shown playing the pipes, attracting the attention of four chickens who may be getting closer than would be advisable. I.C.S. was the most important of several pre-war ceramic art studios in Campania, founded in 1927 by Max Malamerson, a German artist. Located in Vietri Sul Mar, I.C.S. promulgated a new form of ceramic art that brought together folk themes with modern art, much as Picasso did two decades later in Vallauris, France. I.C.S. exhibited its ceramics at the II Salernitana d'Arte exhibition in 1933. By 1935, Guido Gambone was the firm's artistic director, so Gambone may have designed and glazed this tile.
